Although I really liked this book, and found the author to be refreshing in her approach to some of the real-life scenarios presented in her book, I found the method by which she used to present her opinions to be incredibly frank, and bordering on being somewhat harsh. All in all, Dr. Black tells it like it is, and may the Good Lord help you if you can’t hear the words that are coming out of her mouth.
As a Grad student who will be studying Counseling in the Fall, what I understand from my Sociology background is this, everyone has a right to choose what they want to do, and how they will do it, but quite often, most people don’t like they get, when their choices are ill advised. Whether the results are a broken marriage, a broken heart, a broken relationship, STD’s/HIV/AID’s, unwanted pregnancies, bankruptcy, an inner/outer sphere of negative soul-sucking people, and/or absolute personal failure; for the most part, the choice is ours. But here’s the funny thing, for those who choose to buy their wisdom instead of observing it from the failures/advice of others, life can potentially be an endless loop of failures and regrets. However, for those who do choose to learn via observation or self-reflection, the rewards can tremendous.
It’s all about choice. After reading this book, what I got from it was this, you can either learn (from your own mistakes, observing the wisdom of others, and adhering to counselors like Dr. Black), or you can go your own way and get burned by situations that will literally rip your life to shreds.
After observing and counseling many couples and individuals, this woman is incredibly familiar with the human propensity to choose Life, or choose Death (to spiritual growth, relationships, finances, personal fulfillment, etc).
Giving this one: 4 stars
Unfortunately, I did not enjoy the book. While I appreciated the author's knowledge on the Bible and how to relate it to the real world, it came off as a more preachy Dear Abby. I didn't realize the book was going to be literally answers to personal questions, and they were all very specific to the individual's situation. Not very many questions that interested me enough to want to read the answers.
Live Right Now by Dr. Sabrina Black was a straight, no nonsense, ready-or-not kind of book. It was a book that presented with a strong voice and a very well rounded content base.
In this book, Black was able to convey many things as she sought to give "honest answers to life's tough questions." She provided Scriptural content. She gave tips and strategies to address typical and atypical problems associated with living life and dealing with relationships. She provided a Live Right Now life application template for deeper thought and study. She cited further reading resources. She issued prayers for topics related to sex and sexuality, parenting, financial matters, etc. She also listed a number of Q and A questions for readers to consider.
Throughout this book, Black made a point of encouraging many to consider Christian counseling. She referred to herself and to her own personal experiences, as well as made reference to some of the materials that she herself has available.
This book educated, just as much as it counseled. It contained inspirational and motivational information that should prove helpful to those who are in need.
Rating: 3/5 Recommend: I would recommend this book, however, I would be very mindful of who I did recommend it to. I don't know that everyone will like how direct the author is. She makes her opinions and views known in a very matter-of-fact way. Still, I believe there are those who will absolutely love this style of communication and benefit greatly.
A complimentary ARC was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive report. The words I have shared are my own.
