Description

I am a book. And I want to beat you! Think you can beat me? First, you’ll have to complete my ridiculous, ludicrous, yet absolutely hilarious challenges.

New Zealand has the longest place name in the word. Can you say: Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaunga horonukupokaiwhenuakitnatahu quicker than me?
Here are some more of my extra-silly challenges:

  • Can you point to your spine?
    • What about my spine?
  • Can you make the tiniest whisper ever?
  • Can you make the noise an otter makes?
  • Can you do an impression of a goldfish by holding your breath?
    • They can go for five months without oxygen!

An engaging, entertaining book designed to be played with, packed with clever facts, and comic genius. Gemma Correll’s funny comic-style illustrations bring the character of the Book to life and make for a fresh and exciting read.

It’s ideal for reluctant readers, as they become a vital part of the book’s story, using their imagination to outwit the book… however they choose to do so!

Each reading experience with this book is different, leading to fun-filled re-reads each time. Play along on your own or as a family—just do whatever it takes to Beat This Book!

Such a cute, unique activity book. Each activity seems like it would fit a wide age range, and would be fun for toddlers up to elementary school age children. The challenges keep children interested and give an incentive to stay engaged and keep reading.

I did not know what to expect this book and it was a fresh and original one.
Stunning.
Interactive, engaging and funny.
The art style is both funny and cute. And the book is an adorably grumpy character.

Children love brain-teasers like those in Howard Calvert’s clever picture book; however, the book also includes puzzles, activities, thought experiments, ideas for drawing and more. What fun! But as wonderful as Calvert’s words are, it’s Gemma Correll’s off-beat illustrations prove just as fun. Grownups will love this delightful book as much as kids.

In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley, Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books and Happy Yak in exchange for an honest review. And, also in the interest of full disclosure, I didn’t beat the book.

This book was excellent, but definitely one to read in paper form. So good, in fact, that I pre-ordered the paper copy to gift to my four-year-old for Christmas! I love interactive picture books, and this one gives so many different and creative ways for children to interact. Easy five stars.

A book that dares you to pick out the smallest dog drawing, think about the world being upside down, make noise, turn it into a hat, and generally think outside the box (I mean book). Geared for small people, but I enjoyed it too. Gemma Correll's illustrations, including a pug, made me smile. Fun!
