Royal Blue is like a sad song we all intentionally put on when we feel bad in order to feel even worse. It’s a love letter to melancholy in all areas of life. Particularly love, because love is the one and only form of self-torment that humans choose to relive again and again.

But people enjoy reading those melancholic poems about a tempting self-destructive love, a rudderless road trip through life, and a distinct sense of absolute confusion about one’s purpose in this universe.

Read them just the way they were written - at 3 am, sitting on the floor next to an empty liquor glass and a full ashtray, questioning life choices and possibly listening to the cheesiest of love songs. This is poetry reminiscing about a love that has never been, places that no longer exist and a version of us that is long gone.

Royal Blue by Ellie Ilieva is a thought-provoking collection that leads us to ponder the very meaning of our existence and, more specifically, the pull that we repeatedly feel toward love, even though we have been bruised over and over again in our unrelenting pursuit. Like a melancholic stream of consciousness, these verses draw the reader into an abyss of self-examination and reflection, and I was submersed in their depths from the very first page. Ms Ilieva is a talent to watch. 4.5 stars

There is some really good poetry in here. I like that most of her poems rhyme and that they tend to have an existential theme.

I'd be happy to read more of her work.
