Description
“My hair slips down my back and shoulders and around my face like fresh snow falling on the forest floor. Pure white. I raise my chin as the buyers stare. Yes. Look. You don’t want me. Because, eventually, accidentally, I will destroy you. It’s what I do.”
Seventeen-year-old slave girl, Nym, should not exist. In a world where Elementals are only born male, and always killed at birth, she is an anomaly at best. At worst, people around her die.
When a court emissary identifies her weather-manipulating ability as a weapon, Nym is purchased and put to work honing her skills. With time running out for the kingdom of Faelen, Nym might be all that stands between it and the technologically-advanced horror racing down upon them—not to mention the rumored reemergence of the monstrous shapeshifter, Draewulf. But some elements even she can’t control.
Nym must decide whom to trust as she’s unleashed into a world of assassins, changelings, and political betrayal surrounding a young king fighting for his throne, a tired nation that has forgotten its calling, and her handsome tutor whose dark secrets could destroy both her people and her heart.

Hmm. I'm mixed on this one. The world building was interesting, but there wasn't enough. We just weren't given enough info about the world that Nym exists in. We get tantalizing little details, like the madness of creatures or that there is magic, but no depth to that detail. So that was disappointing. But what there was, was interesting. Flesh eating horses (I was reminded of David Eddings' Belgarath books), a segment of people who control the elements, and more. But then there's Nym. Who is both interesting and annoying all at once. She is at times completely spineless and oblivious to everything, and at others challenging and willing to fight for what's right. I don't know if I'll go for the series, but think this is a decent fantasy. I'm not sure how I feel about the cutting in this though. I didn't find it will done and thought it was kind of tasteless.
Nym is a slave in her world, one that shouldn't exist. She's an Elemental, she can control the skies, calling down lightning in a deadly rain. And deadly it is. She's had 14 owners and had killed in every household she's been in. But things are about to change for Nym. She's bought by a crazy noble who seems to think. Nym has the power to save the world. But at what cost?
Ya’ll, I have been waiting for this book from the minute I heard it was coming out….and it’s finally here!!!
First, I have to say that I absolutely love the cover- isn’t it to die for?
Now, let me tell you why you need to read Storm Siren…
#1 The World Building- the author does a fascinating job of creating a setting that is dark, dangerous and just overall awesome! This world was creative and unique to others I have read in the fantasy genre.
#2 The Characters- I was easily able to empathize with Nym from the first few pages of the story. There is something mysteriously beautiful in this character and I don’t want to give too much away here, but she surprised me in so many ways. I love that she is an elemental, this isn’t something I have seen in Christian fantasy very often…if ever. Secondary characters (Eogan, Colin, and Breck) add so much to the story and I was thrilled to get to know each one little by little.
#3 The Overall Message- to me, this story is a wonderful reminder that “to whom much is given, much is required”. As Nym had to learn to hone her powers, she also had to choose to use them for good. While we may not be able to manipulate the weather, God has gifted us with certain traits that we can strengthen and choose to use for the good of others and the glory of God.
Basically, I absolutely loved this debut and I cannot wait for the next installment in the series! If you are a fan of adventure, fantasy, strong characters and wonderful worlds…don’t miss Storm Siren!!!
