World-class zoologist Darrin Lunde celebrates the power of the small. Small dinosaurs weren't just cute; their size had evolutionary benefits. And when that giant meteor hit, who do you think survived?
Sure, you've heard of Triceratops, but do you know Microceratus, one of the smallest horned dinos? Love T. rex? Allow us to introduce Compsognathus, a tiny meat-eater that hunted insects.
Little (and big) kids alike will appreciate the SIZE-mic fun to be had with this prehistoric introduction to dinos of all shapes and sizes.

I don’t think there is a more popular topic for children than dinosaurs, and for good reason. I love that this book focused on smaller dinosaurs, describing a well-known large dinosaur and its smaller counterpart. The author also laid out a great case for the benefits of being small. I appreciated the predictable structure of the book, which can be beneficial for younger children.
My favorite part of the book was the glossary of different dinosaurs at the end, showing the reader how their names link to various Greek root words. This would be a great book in the classroom for introducing root words.
Dinosaur books are always popular, and this book of pint sized dinosaurs is sure to be a big hit! An excellent addition to any library picture book collection, caregivers will appreciate the handy pronunciation guides on each page and although some young readers may be disappointed by the lack of detail in the color-washed illustrations, they will certainly enjoy learning more about dinosaurs that are "just their size." Perfect for inclusion in a library summer learning backpack program or in partnership with a local museum! Thank you to NetGalley for access to this delightful arc.
Dinosaurs Can Be Small is a fantastic picture book that highlights some of the smallest dinos around! I loved that it included my favorite dino, the Compsognathus! The illustrations were adorable, and there were nice accompanying facts with each one.
Thanks to NetGalley, Charlesbridge, and Darrin Lunde for the chance to read and review! My opinions are my own.
Being big isn't everything! Such a great lesson for little kids. I never say no to dinosaurs, and this book has cute pictures and a great theme. It's fun to read about smaller dinosaurs and how they lived. In the end, being small probably saved their lives
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
Cute and simple. Great for kids who are just getting interested in the topic.
Illustrations are perfect for the title.
What a wonderful way to mix non fiction with much needed SEL. I cannot wait to read this one to my kindergarten students! The illustrations and the new words, even for the teacher, are amazing!
My dinosaur loving son really enjoyed this one! Great for any kiddo as educational about dinosaurs! Fun pictures as well! Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. A kids nonfiction book about big dinosaurs and the many small dinosaurs too.
Oh my goodness, If you kids love dinosaurs, this book was just absolutely adorable. I was so taken by how adorable this book was! My kids loved this book so much. It was darling. Absolutely loved it!
I loved this! Lots of love and attention for tiny dinos! It had some of my favorites, and even had flying reptiles and marine reptiles, too.
Very cute way to discuss dinosaurs big and small. A entertaining read and illustrations were entertaining and showed the size difference between dinosaurs. I was very thankful for the break down of the names as well. My littles really enjoyed trying to say the names and learning about new dinos.
Thank you Net Galley, Darrin Lunde and Charlesbridge for allowing me to review.
What a fun book.
My kids love everything dinosaurs and this book hit the spot.
the illustrations are lovely and my kids were very excited seeing all the different types of dinosaurs.
educational and fun to read.
Excellent dinosaur book for early readers (elementary) that does not talk down to the children. It includes the scientific names of the dinosaurs. The pictures are good--and not babied. I will be buying hardback copies for my youngest grandchildren, and I suspect it will become a favorite book.
I thought that this was a lovely little book!
My daughter is a massive fan of dinosaurs and really enjoyed this book.
We read the book together and thought that the illustrations were wonderful, nice, bright and clear and they brought the book to life.
I really liked the idea behind this book and the comparisons between the larger and smaller dinosaurs. The book is easy to follow and understand and it is great for the age range given too - I think it would be a great book to have in primary school classes and loved that the little dinosaurs also got a mention as they are so often overlooked.
It is 4.5 stars from me for this one, rounded up to 5 stars for Goodreads and Amazon - very highly recommended!
Thank you to the author, Charlesbridge and NetGalley, for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
My dinosaur-lovers loved this book. What a great idea to contrast the usually much better-known large dinos with the small dinos that don't necessarily get much coverage, and to show the difference in size. Also great: the pronunciation guide for each dino, and the fun illustrations and details.
An enjoyable introduction to the big and small dinosaur animal world, where the benefits of being small do matter! Magyarosaurus, one of the smallest long-necked dinosaurs, survives when food is scarce, unlike its larger counterpart Brontosaurus. Microceratus, a diminutive horned dinosaur, has the advantage of being able to hide from big meat eaters, while the much larger Triceratops cannot. Tiny Compsognathus, a small meat-eating dinosaur, dines on plentiful, nutritious insects, while Tyrannosaurus requires much larger prey to survive. Other prehistoric animals such as the pterosaurs and ichthyosaurs are also featured and compared for their size advantages. In the end, only the smallest dinosaurs survive. Six paired examples of big and small prehistoric animals are displayed, showcased in sweet, warm and digital media-based illustrations. In addition, sidebars are included to display the size and measurement comparisons. A list of the animal names, along with their definitions and origins, are shared in this wonderful addition to all preschool and care center libraries. Recommended for ages 3-7.
Out NOW! Thank you to @Netgalley and Charlesbridge for sharing an advanced digital copy with me to review. All opinions are my own.
This is a great book for introducing kiddos to the concept that though the big guys have gotten all the attention for many, many years, there were indeed dinos that stood mere inches tall. Ariel Landy's cute, cartoony illustrations are sure to appeal to the younger set, and keep them turning the pages. This is a fascinating and entertaining read for kids (and adults) of all ages.
