Description

Bristow does “a grand job of storytelling” (the New York Times) in this memorable novel of the late eighteenth-century pioneers who settled the Louisiana wilderness, establishing a civilization of charm, luxury, and tragic injustice

For his service in the king’s army during the French and Indian War, Judith Sheramy’s father, a Puritan New Englander, is granted a parcel of land in far-off Louisiana. As the family ventures down the Mississippi to make a new home in the wilderness, Judith meets Philip Larne, an adventurer who travels in the finest clothes Judith has ever seen. He is a rogue, a killer, and a thief—and the first thing he steals is Judith’s heart.

Three thousand acres of untamed jungle, overrun with jaguars, Indians, and pirates, wait for Philip in Louisiana. He and Judith will struggle with their stormy marriage and the challenges of the American Revolution as they strive to build an empire for future generations.

This is the first novel in Gwen Bristow’s Plantation Trilogy, which also includes The Handsome Road and This Side of Glory.

"Miss Bristow belongs among those Southern novelists who are trying to interpret the South and its past in critical terms. It may be that historians will alter some of the details of her picture. But no doubt life in a small river town in Louisiana during the years 1859-1885 was like the life revealed in The Handsome Road." —The New York Times

Another trilogy offering is “Deep Summer” by Gwen Bristow, first published in 1937, but re-released this summer. It is the first in the “Plantation Trilogy,” which includes ‘The Handsome Road” and “This Side of Glory.” It’s the story of several generations who settled in the Louisiana wilderness during the late 18th century. It focuses on how the families and individuals deal with change, whether it be through relationships, racial tensions, governmental takeovers or economic shifts.

Originally published in 1946, this novel is the embodiment of classic southern historical fiction! Suffice to say, I LOVE IT!!! Well developed characters and a fast paced storyline... I really didn't want it to end!!! But I'm happy to say I get to enjoy two more books in this trilogy... I recommend to every historical fiction fan!!!

Wow. As my introduction to this particular genre and first read by this author, I am very impressed. Gripping is the word that comes to mind. Just gripping. I love historical romances and historical fiction and believe I have found a gem with Ms. Bristow. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review and honestly, this story is so rich that aI literally had to stop myself from reading so that I could go on with my real life. Family, making their own way when Louisana was nothing much more than wilderness and the bold look at plantation life was riveting. This author is an amazing storyteller. I am not a "crier" but damn if my eyes didn't mist and mist good while reading Deep Summer.

The back story was engaging and I loved really understanding and literally seeing how Judith and Philip came to become prominent in the community. I like the generational feel of the story- an aspect that I thought would bore me, but actually gave a depth to the novel that would have been missing with out it.
Bristow has made a believer out of me with Deep Summer. I totally recommend it, having insight into the origins of Southern mentality and economy and getting this history in such an appealing and interesting saga is 100% worth it.
