More than an entertaining read, this was a captivating story. Each character has a very distinct voice, not just a different accent to mark them. Each is intriguing for their own struggles as well as the over arching struggle of the story. There are good characters who have many influences pushing them to do evil, good characters who are doing evil in the name of good, and characters whose actions can not so clearly be defined yet. It is an interesting mix that leaves the reader on the edge of the seat rapidly turning pages.
I've read on a number of forums about people's concern that there are so few writers working on the current iteration of the forgotten realms. What I believe they are missing is that authors such as Mrs Evans are writing novels of a quality that is more important than the quantity that may come with more writers. Having read the entire sundering as well as the recent Drizzt novels I can say without a doubt that fans will be pleased with the way the world is shaping up. While each writer has their own voice, their own areas and own characters they seem to be writing very much in sync. While it has always been authors writing in a shared world these authors truly give the impression to the reader that they are in the same world just following different characters.
This book was wonderful. Well paced with action and drama intertwined. Suspenseful at times, there is no telling who is on whose side and whether it will stay that way, with the conclusions and revelations being tinted with just the right amount of mystery and plots left for further story. There were no abrupt moments that jar the reader and once picked up this book is hard to put down. A fun journey that only makes me want more.
