Description

In this propulsive new thriller from the author of the breakout debut The Quiet Tenant, a reunion between estranged siblings is interrupted when a woman is found murdered at their luxury vacation resort, dredging up memories from a shared childhood they’ve tried to keep buried in the past.

Frida and Gabriel arrive seeking a fresh start at the stunning Ara Hotel in the secluded desert of Escalante, Utah. Once so close they were able to finish each other’s sentences, they’ve grown apart in recent years after a sudden, unspeakable tragedy. Now, at the luxe resort, they are ready to reconnect between dips in the pool and hikes on spectacular desert trails. It all feels like paradise—until the dead body of a beautiful young woman who was vacationing at the Ara with her powerful, much older husband is discovered. When the local police arrive and put the resort into lockdown, Gabriel and Frida are forced to revisit memories from their upbringing in a cloistered cult in upstate New York, led by a charismatic and fanatical leader. It was their dramatic, fiery escape from his control fifteen years earlier that bonded them for life—or so Frida thought.

Alternating between past and present timelines, Our Last Resort builds toward a shattering climax that uncovers the fate of the murdered Ara guest and reveals the shocking secrets Gabriel and Frida have been hiding for years. Taut, gripping, and intense, Clémence Michallon’s sophomore suspense novel is a nail-biter until the last page, cementing her status as a major new talent in the genre.

The Quiet Tenant was in my books of the year, I couldn’t wait to see what Clémence Michallon would write next…

The Last Resort is a murder mystery thriller set in a luxury desert resort. Guests Frida and Gabriel were once as close as brother and sister but have grown apart in recent years.

After building up detailed, complex characters we are treated to layers of tense, tightly plotted twists. I’ll make some big comparisons, imagine character writing and involved pasts on a Gillian Flynn level with Peter Swanson’s intricate intelligent plotting.

I loved this book! More mainstream and accessible than the brilliant The Quiet Tenant, Our Last Resort should appeal to all fans of high quality thrillers.

Our Last Resort proves what we were all hoping, Clémence Michallon is a real, consistent, versatile, top quality thriller writer.

𝗔𝗥𝗖 𝗥𝗘𝗩𝗜𝗘𝗪:

I absolutely fell for Michallon’s writing when I read The Quiet Tenant and so when I saw that they had a new book releasing I got so excited. This was such a fast paced twisty thriller that has you sitting on the edge of your seat once again. I loved how well written our characters are even side characters as well as the weaving timelines going from past to present day. This read is jam packed with dark secrets, trust issues and lies along with mystery. This book will leave you guessing at each page turn and leave your jaw on the floor at the ending. Once again, I will be watching for more books to come out always from our author and this may be the perfect book club book for next summer.

Large thank you to our Author, NetGalley as well as Knopf, Pantheon, Vintage, and Anchor, Knopf.

Frieda and Gabriel grew up in a cult together, then, years later Gabriel’s wife, Anna, suspiciously died. After that, the two drifted apart. When they finally come back together for what is meant to be a relaxing vacation in Utah, another guest is murdered and once again, the spotlight is on them.

Frieda and Gabriel are both flawed figures. With their pasts, this doesn’t come as a surprise. With the way things pan out, switching between the past and the present, it becomes clear how they became who they are, and why they cling so dearly to each other.

Furthermore, the ride is bumpy and wild. It seems like it’s straightforward at the beginning, yet you quickly come to question if you can directly trust anyone involved. It has so many twists and turns that leave you guessing what the outcome could be.

While at the end of the day, it is a whodunnit, it kept me locked in the entire time. It doesn’t just tackle classic thriller topics, but dives deeper. It goes into how well we really know people and what bonds us together to create a propelling story that you cannot put down.

I would recommend this to anyone who loves interpersonal dramas as well as murder mysteries
