Description
Michael Connelly is a fan, calling The Replacements: "...gritty street poem recited by a voice unalterably committed to redemption and doing the right thing in a wrong world."
Bruno Johnson, ex-detective with Los Angeles County Sheriff s Department and an ex-convict, is hiding out from the FBI in Costa Rica, tending bar to support eight children he illegally rescued from abusive homes. Partway through a normal day, Barbara Wicks, a former colleague and the chief of police for Montclair, California, walks into his bar. Bruno is shocked to the core. Is she there to arrest him and take him back to California? Turns out she’s there to request Bruno’s help. Two children have been kidnapped.
The kidnapper, Jonas Mabry, was himself a victim whom Bruno rescued as a small child. Now Mabry demands a fool’s retribution, a million-dollar ransom, and Bruno to put his life on the line to get the money. In this twisted turn of fate, Bruno returns as a wanted criminal to California. Despite the risk of arrest and even his life, he cannot turn his back on these kids."
Advance Praise
Praise for the Bruno Johnson Series...
“I really loved The Disposables. It’s raw, powerful, and eloquent. It’s a gritty street poem recited by a voice unalterably committed to redemption and doing the right thing in a wrong world. I’ll be first in line for the next one from David Putnam.”
—Michael Connelly, New York Times best-selling author of The Gods of Guilt
“Dave Putnam’s novel, The Disposables, is a high-octane thrill ride that won’t let you catch your breath, much less put down the book. Bruno Johnson is both tough-as-nails and soft-as-butter, running an underground railroad for abused children and facing obstacles that will make your hair stand on end. This is the best debut novel I’ve read in years.”
—William Bernhardt, best-selling author of the Ben Kincaid series
“This novel gives off heat…there are a number of unique and startling plot twists. But what really recommends the book is the high-octane presentation…the occasional clunky sentence doesn’t detract. Rather, they add somehow to the sense of urgency and authenticity, the feeling that this is the real deal, set down by somebody who was there and still hasn’t gotten over it. The SWAT-like assault on the crime house is an impressive set piece.”
—Booklist
“Nonstop action keeps the pages turning at a furious pace in this debut ripped-from-the-headlines thriller showcasing the darker side of LA County's law enforcement. The positive Robin Hood hero contrasts with the drug culture; surprisingly mild language and most violence off-page will broaden the appeal. Think T. Jefferson Parker (Charlie Hood series) or Andrew Vachss. Putnam's police background adds to the authenticity.”
—Library Journal
“…a very readable thriller that knows where it’s going and makes sure you’re still reading until it gets there.”

Wow, this book would make a great movie. An ex cop, ex con, hiding in Costa Rica from the FBI. He is raising children he has "rescued" from abusive foster parents. This book never lets up. It is one twist after another. Bruno Johnson goes back to CA to help catch a kidnapper. He has knowledge that the police and FBI don't. With the help of his Cop friend and his wife he finally figures it out. This is the second book in the series and I am getting the first one and sure hope there is a third +. Great writing David Putnam.
