Description
A lyrical, beautifully illustrated story in verse from the author and artist who brought us Wildflower, The Book of Selkie, and While You Were Sleeping, exploring creative and mindful ways to live with mental illness.
I lose track of the hours
And sometimes the days
When anger takes over
When sadness just stays…
In this gentle verse story, children of diverse ages and backgrounds experience a range of emotions, from anger to depression to anxiety, "losing a day" to negative thoughts and feelings. Whether a child feels rage "buzzing like bees" or loses a day under the covers, wrapped in the "softest cocoon" of their bed, they will soon discover that losing a day doesn't have to be a bad thing. You can lose a day listening to the calm and steady tapping of the rain, or by reading or writing a story, by running or playing music. By listening to your breath. By the end of this thoughtful book, readers and parents will learn about creative responses to the most common mental health challenges for young people.
With gorgeous gouache and watercolour illustrations, and backmatter featuring nature-based mindfulness activities and a heartfelt letter from the author, I Lost A Day beautifully demonstrates both the challenges and the creative solutions to living with mental illness.

I received an electronic ARC from Nimbus Publishing through NetGalley.
Beautifully illustrated book that offers ideas for kids who are dealing with strong emotions. Readers see all the ways they "lost a day" as they coped with anger, sadness, etc. Scott offers a gentle tone and affirmation for the emotions they feel and the ways they cope. The soft focus artwork encourages being gentle. A definite must for families and classrooms.

We gain ourselves when we lose ourselves in something other than just ourselves.
Emotionally brilliant and delicately relatable. I love how the volcanic-red line drawings of emotion transform into images of electrified joy! This powerful and simple message about how losing our sense of time gives us time us to regain a sense of ourselves is beautifully told. A story that's completely approachable for children (and adults) of all ages.
Thanks to @NetGalley for sharing this DRC with me for an honest review.

The art is this story was the first thing to catch my eye. It is so stunning and full of things for the eye to see without being overwhelming which is so important for a children’s book. The story itself is very clear and isn’t a topic often discussed in children’s books and it deserves more attention so I loved that. It’s written simply but it flows well and is easy for children to digest. Both my 2 year old and my 9 year old loved it!

This book shows us how sometimes we have bad days, and how they might look and feel different for each of us. What I love and appreciate are the many examples of practicing mindfulness. Mental health resources are so important for all ages. This book is age level appropriate with beautiful artwork portraying the bad days along with the exercises we can try when recovering from bad days. Honestly, most adults would even benefit from reading this book! Impressively, my 4 year old daughter was engaged and intrigued the entire time I read through it! I imagine this book would be a great edition for all children educators and caretakers, as well as child/family therapists to have as a resource.
Thank you Nimbus Publishing for providing me with this advanced reader copy of the book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

I was so unexpectedly moved by this story. I absolutely love the artwork but even as an adult, this concept of losing a day either to negative feelings or coping mechanisms to manage said negative feelings - holds true. The fact that this is discussed in a digestible manner for kids to understand is definitely a highlight of this story. I also love the representation that the character art in this story has. Every child illustrated looks different, and I think it makes more likely for a child to see themself seen in this story.

This book is beautiful inside and out both with the illustrations and the thought put in to the words. My 4 year old daughter and I really enjoyed reading the book together and talking about all the different ways the narrator "lost a day".

When I started reading it, I was worried that it would be the "same old, same old" kind of children's books about emotions, but this one is different. The second half is particularly good as it shows children how to turn a negative into a positive.

This beautifully illustrated picture book shares a poem about losing a day to depression. The book acknowledges a real sense of loss, while also showing how slowing down and connecting with yourself and nature is still worthwhile, and can help you heal. The vivid illustrations greatly enhance the book and convey lots of emotion. This book will appeal to kids and adults who are struggling with depression, as well as other mental struggles or chronic health problems that limit their activities.

This picture book in verse describes the many ways that kids may experience depression. But it does not end there without hope. the author does a beautiful job of giving different ways to work through complex feelings and emotions.
I want to add this to my library and I hope that other libraries, both school and public will add it as well.

A thoughtful exploration of sadness and depression for young readers, with beautiful, thought-provoking illustrations. Though it feels heavy in some areas, this is balanced by showing characters actively coping with their emotions. The coping strategies make it an informative and valuable read!

I Lost a Day encapsulates rage and sadness well. I found myself resonating with it and appreciating the affirmations. Briana Corr Scott’s writing is very engaging.

I’m not sure I can fully describe how this book made me feel on first read (I read it over a few times before coming back to write my review). This book is stunning, and not just visually. The rhyme scheme is lovely and makes it easy to read, and the content is perfect. The main message- understanding that sadness (potentially depression) can happen but there’s is beauty and light in life to pull you through, even in the most minute but special details. On top of the content, the illustrations are astonishing.y beautiful. I would love to own a physical copy of this book to have on hand for my children to read as they grow and experience the world, and all it has to offer, for themselves.

I Lost A Day by Briana Corr Scott is a wonderful picture book told in verse about what you can do with big feelings around grief and sadness. I appreciated that the author wrote from her own experience and there is the added benefit of suggested activities at the end of the book. Briana does a good job of describing the physical sensations of big emotions. This will make a great addition to your shelves! Thanks to Netgalley for giving me the chance to read it in exchange for my honest thoughts!

Loved the illustrations and thought this book was super cute. I will definitely be reading to my children :D

What a wonderful book. A powerful, accessible depiction of overwhelming emotions whether you are big or small and the many wonderful ways you can find yourself again. The simple message that days are not lost when they are spent finding your way back to you was genuinely moving. It is the kind of book I read with my children with a tear in my eye that helps reset us all. I will be recommending to everyone I know. The activities at the end are brilliant too.

A lovely, warm book covering the very tricky topic of depression- not an easy subject for anyone but very difficult to broach with youngsters. The book is both helpful and positive, beautiful poetic words describing ways to move forwards through each day, one at a time.
