Description
Work
engagement is an intriguing dimension of workplace psychology. According to a
study done by Gallup, 87% of employees identify as either not engaged or
actively disengaged, and actively disengaged employees currently outnumber
engaged employees 2-to-1.
To
make sense of people’s behavior in complex organizations, instead of offering a
dry presentation of organizational psychology theories, Chantal Gautier analyzes
transcripts from interviews with people at different levels in various types of
organizations and sheds light into real organizational work practices. Personal
narratives, exercises and reflective practices make the material relatable to
everybody’s experience.
The
Psychology of Work explores the role of integrity, recognition, commitment,
leadership, communication, and autonomy in employee engagement and happiness. It
raises awareness of current working practices and stresses the need for change.
Offering very practical advice, Gautier emphasizes the importance of putting the
“humane” back into organizational life.
Advance Praise
Of interest to students and also more mature business readers seeking a useful synopsis of the classical theories related to the world of work and their application, this accessible book draws insights from a wide range of industries and occupations, and poses some interesting questions as to where we go from here in the world of work."--Mark Carter, PwC HR Services Ireland Markets Leader
"This eminently readable and timely book strikes at the heart of what makes a workplace work well: its people. People matter, regardless of their place in the hierarchy or how small or complex the organization. Attitudes, emotions and behaviours create a working culture which impacts directly upon creativity and ultimately performance. Understanding how to motivate a workforce is the future of successful organizations. This book integrates key elements of organizational, business and social psychology theory that inform the creation of effective employees, teams and leaders. It provides a significant new resource for students, professionals, practitioners and general public alike. The most distinctive and successful element of this book is the way original research is used to inform and theory and practice throughout."

I would say that this book is a collection of important psychological concepts applied at work. The author, Chantal Gautier presented each concept with proper objectivity and enough details. To support the concepts in psychology literature, the author interviewed 32 industry leaders from different companies covering volunteer organizations as well as those who are in private and public sectors.
I like the fact that the concepts were presented objectively, thereby giving a balance understanding of conflicting theories. For example, when the book discussed about the leadership theories all concepts albeit conflicting were given enough space for readers to thoroughly understand each. There are illustrations too so that the readers will be able to visualize the concept.
However, I just observed that the book is high in academic orientation. When I was reading this I felt that I am reading my old psychology textbook and there will be a quiz by the end of each chapters. Although there are no exercises, the book feels like an academic paper due to several citations especially in between sentences. This cause lack of fluidity in reading experience.
Overall, this is still a good book especially if you are just starting to understand the psychological concepts at work. I would recommend this to fresh graduates who are starting to embark their journey in the world of work.
