Description
Only Ardie A. Davis and Paul Kirk, the go-to sources on barbecue, can earn the trust and the recipes from the nation's barbecue legends, from Texas to Memphis, the Deep South, Kansas City, Oklahoma, and even a few joints outside of the traditional barbecue belt.
Tasty sides include tips, tricks, techniques, fun memorabilia, 365 full-color photos of the joints and their food, and firsthand recollections of tales from the pits culled from over a century of combined barbecue experience. There is even a section of barbecue basics for those who are just getting started.
With more than 100 recipes for mouthwatering starters (Fried Cheese Stick Grits, BBQ Egg Rolls), moist and flavorful meats, both classic and inventive side dishes (BBQ Cornbread, Grilled Potato Salad), a slew of sauces and rubs, and even some decadent desserts (Fried Pies, Root Beer Cake, Pig Candy), this book should come with its own wet-nap.

I loved this book! I can't wait for summer to be here so we can enjoy BBQ again. Will definitely add this book to my home collection. I loved the pictures and all the yummy recipes. I could actually see myself making a number of these recipes. Love that about a cookbook in that it is put together with useable recipes.
I love the large variety of recipes and photos and like that there are both main dishes, as well as sides.. These look like recipes that "real people", not just gourmet chefs could actually make. It's not the right season to BBQ where I live, but am looking forward to trying some of the recipes, especially some of the non-traditional recipes like the nachos and the potatoes. The photos of various BBQ restaurants make this an interesting book to look at, even when you're not looking for something to cook. This is a fun BBQ book that would make a nice Father's Day gift.
I received this book from NetGalley, through the courtesy of Andrews McMeel Publishing. The book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.
This is a great book about barbeque, barbeque joints, and dishes (from slaw to dessert) that accompany barbeque in the many different barbeque restaurants throughout the country.
These guys know their barbeque. There is something for everyone in this book - from St. Louis ribs to barbequed mutton. And there is a lot of information in the book about different restaurants which adds so much to the study of barbeque. This attention to the restaurants gives the book so much color and interest which lifts it above the usual barbeque cookbook. And the sides! There are some recipes in this book worth trying.
Please don't read this book when you're hungry. You'll only torture yourself reading about such delicious food. Read only on a full stomach!
Very enjoyable and educational book!
Looking forward to summer when I can really try some of these recipes. I enjoyed some of the history behind the different BBQ restaurants in the U.S. I just regret that my travel budget is not large enough to visit some of the places so I will just have to settle for trying to replicate the recipes. The rubs and sauces appear to be versatile enough to use in several different ways. A waring to some who are interested in the book - many of the recipes appear to require a smoker so keep that in mind.
Barbeque at it's best, it's all in here. From appetizers to desserts and everything in between. If you want to cook barbeque, this is the book.
Rest assured by reading this book you can get an urge for some BBQ.
The pictures make one's mouth drool. I can't wait to try the recipes.
Who is ready to join me on a BBQ road trip?
Seriously, I want to take a road trip and stop at many of these fabulous BBQ joints along the way. The wonderful thing about this cookbook is that you can take that road trip without ever leaving your home. Though, I must say, calling this a cookbook truly does it a disservice. Yes, it contains an abundance of recipes within, but in more respects it’s much like a coffee table book featuring fabulous pictures, locations, and history.
All that being said, it is still a cookbook, so let’s get into the meat and potatoes, literally, of what you’ll find here. If you’re a lover of BBQ, as I am, you will be in heaven. If you aren’t, I think this book may serve to make you a believer. The recipes are organized into four categories, Starters, Main Dishes, Sides and Condiments, and Desserts. There really is a great variety of items to try and I think that you’ll find pretty much something for everyone. The recipes are well designed and easy to follow, which is always the most important thing when choosing a cookbook. The added benefit here is that you get great stories, history, and fantastic pictures relating to the recipe, as well as the establishments serving the items.
Yes, I want to try many of the recipes presented, though some will be a definite pass. Cooking a whole hog will definitely not be happening at my home, nor will raccoon or rattlesnake be making there way to my table. And, I most definitely will not be eating Rocky Mountain Oysters. On the other hand, I’m down for any and all recipes for brisket. Brisket Nachos! Yes, sign me up. As a big fan of appetizers, side, and desserts, I found a lot of traditional, as well as unique and interesting items to try in those categories. Root Beer Cake? I’ve never heard of it, but it sounds intriguing. The recipes I’m most looking forward to trying are the Cheesy Potato Bake, Cornmeal battered Onion Rings, Grilled Potato Salad, BBQ Eggrolls, Lexington Banana Pudding, and Fried Peach Pies. They all look and sound fabulous, but that’s just a very small sampling of the many items I want to make.
The end of the book contains some great tips, as well as a listing of the authors’ favorite establishments. These gentleman clearly know their BBQ and I fully trust their judgement in this regard. I will be trying some of these recipes at home, and I highly recommend you purchase this book and try them yourselves. I do still want to take that road trip, however, and enjoy these great culinary creations in the places that made them famous. So, who’s ready to go?
It took a bit to download this book, but once it did I saw it was well worth the wait. Beautiful pictures and tasty recipes (slaughterhouse ribs are on the menu tonight), and a very interesting book to just read. Lots of history and exposure to BBQ places in many locations. Fun recipes of appetizers too. Highly recommend for your library.
Oh My Southern Taste Buds!
You may take the girl out of the south, and she may fall in love with her Alaskan home of 30 years but her heart and her taste buds will always have a Southern Drawl and a Spicy Kick.
This Cook Book in no way disappointed this down home cook. I have collected cookbooks for over 25 years. I have read many a BBQ books in that time but nothing as comprehensive as this!
This is on my wish list already! It will replace several on my shelves in just this one book.
This lovely book covers, meats, sauces, rubs, sides, extremes and even traditional deserts! I knew I had the real deal when the only cornbread had no flour and no sugar! Then my heart sang when they had banana pudding made with real custard, not Jell-o pudding! And finally I knew I had struck gold when I came upon fried pies... So they are peach and my Grandmother's used dried apples... At this point I could not squabble over a fruit choice.
I say 100% Success!
Side Note: I tried to post this @ Amazon & Goodreads but couldn't as it isn't out yet. But I will be posting it on my Book Review Blog Cabinfeverreading.Blogspot.Com which then posts to my twitter page, my Google Feed and my Face Book Account.
