When delicious baked goods become lethal, it's time to find a killer.
Kindness is a virtue
Meanness is a sin
Better watch your bakery pies
For poison I've slipped in
The Amish Artisan Village in Middlebury, Indiana, has been decorated with every color of balloon and flower for the Race for a Cure. As manager of the Village, Amber Bowman is thrilled to see the turnout—and relieved to have something to distract her from the “Poison Poet”—an individual who has been sending notes containing bad poetry to warn of poisoned baked goods.
Then Ryan Duvall crosses the finish line of the race—and falls down dead, murdered in broad daylight. But who did it? And why? The police suspect Preston Johnston, but Amber refuses to believe her employee could do such a thing.
Amber once again looks to her young Amish friend Hannah Troyer to help her find the killer—and to determine if it's the same person leaving the cryptic poems and pies. Can they help the police before the Poison Poet strikes again? Both Amber and Hannah will need to draw on their faith as they fight to preserve the peaceful community they've built at the Amish Artisan Village.

Amber Bowman has been running The Village for two decades, but in the last year she's helped solve two murders that happened on the property. When pies and notes from a "poison poet" start mysteriously showing up in the various Village shops, will Amber be able to crack the case before someone eats the wrong pie? Will she accept help from her Amish and Englisch friends and employees? Will the case be solved before someone ends up dead?
Murder Freshly Baked is the third book in the Amish Village Mystery series, but it's the first Vannetta Chapman book I've read. I particularly enjoyed the way the Amish and Englisch worked together in this book. It gave me hope that people who have vastly different belief systems can still work together to build a peaceful community. This world is filled with acts of prejudice and hate, but this book shows that it doesn't have to be that way.
I also enjoyed the mystery in Murder Freshly Baked. There were a couple of different story lines to follow, and my favorite was Preston's. Each POV (point of view) gave me a fresh outlook on the mystery, though I still didn't figure it out! I love a good mystery, especially ones that stump me along the way. I'll definitely be reading more Vannetta Chapman books in the future.
Thanks to netgalley for an electronic copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Another great read! Another murder mystery to solve. The lives of the two main characters have changed some (marriage and an engagement), but they still have a nose for mysteries. Well done!
I love this series by Vannetta Chapman and am hoping for more. While this book can be read alone, it will leave you wanting to go back and read the others in the series. I love getting to know the characters of the village and how Amber seems to find herself caught up in more that she wants to in the village. She had finally gotten settled down, but can't seem to stay away from stumbling across mysteries and murders. I enjoyed the twists in the plot and seeing the Amish act a bit different than expected.

The story opens with Ryan getting shot and killed in Middlebury Indiana, Amber standing right next to him. A month prior Ryan begins showing interest in a young Amish woman named Marsha despite the fact that there was an eighteen year age difference between them.
When someone begins poisoning food at a local restraunt both the Englischer and Amish communities find themselves in shock? Is a killer on the loose or are these notes left just a bad prank?
When bad poetry about poison pies begin showing up in Amber’s pastry case the threats make Amber fearful of poison laced pies so she sends them to be tested.
What do Pies, bad poetry, and murder have in common? Find out in Murder Freshly Baked…
Five out of five stars.
