Description

Once in a lifetime a person may find the perfect dog, but to have two perfect dogs in a lifetime is practically unheard of. Big Paws, Bigger Heart presents a story of that improbable situation as told by Finley, a Belgian Tervuren dog who came into the life of his adopted dad, Jim Loveless, to fill the enormous void left behind by the loss of Jim’s first dog, Brooks. Finley goes back in time to tell the legend of Brooks. He shares the heartwarming and often humorous tales of how Brooks shaped the lives of not only his owner but of a community by proving faithfulness meant more than championships. This true and inspiring story follows Brooks from his early days of fitting in with his newly adopted family until his forced retirement from the agility competition he and Jim so dearly loved due to bad hips. Written from a dog’s perspective, Big Paws, Bigger Heart explores the love that dogs can bring into our lives and shows how two dogs changed one man’s life.

This is a heartwarming story of a dog and his owner told from a dogs point of view. The love between owner and dog grows thru the story and it is interesting to see how a special bond is formed between these two characters. It will have you laughing and sometimes almost crying all at the same time. It will pull at your heartstrings and put a smile on your face. Definitely a “feel good” book and a great read.

This is a such a wonderful story and what makes it so great is that it is told by a dog's point of view. Finley considers his owners his adopted mom & dad and the female dogs in the family are his sisters. He has a great personality, as most dogs do. It is so perfectly narrated that not long into the story I became familiar with the voices of each character and had a picture in your mind of each character and I loved Finley's voice (mom's too). This is wonderful book that describes how our dogs take their place in our families and in our hearts eternally.

This book is uniquely told from a dog's point of view which gives it a fun perspective. It tells the story of a champion dog and his owner. It is a fun insider's look into the world of breed, obedience and agility training and competitions. Brooks was a very special and talented Tervuren whose story had to be told. Anyone who has ever been smitten with an animal will enjoy this very touching and well written love story. A quick read that will make you laugh and cry.

GREAT STORY, Finley! NOT Too shabby either James...brings back those early memories. and that first idea meeting on how we'd set up KK to be member friendly, and the work that followed...You always were the bestest course builder. TTYL, TY.
BROOKIE lives on at the rainbow bridge just this side by the HGADA field where it is always mid June, and the contacts are not judged.

If you liked "...Racing in the Rain" you're gonna love this. A real heart-warmer that pulls every emotional string like a classic Disney movie. The life of an extraordinary family and their equally extraordinary pets as told through the eyes, ears, nose and voice of one of their own. I hear it's coming soon as an audiobook! Can't wait!

Note, the dog writing the intro was one of my breeding, so I COULD be biased, but I also gave this book as gifts to doggie and non-doggie friends and family alike and everyone enjoyed it. It's very accessibly written, with emotion any dog lover will recognize.

Big Paws, Bigger Heart by James R. Loveless is narrated by Finley (a dog) about Brooks (a dog). This is a heartwarming book about Jim and Leslie Loveless and the dogs that they raised, loved and spent their lives with. From the very first page you will be captured with the story of this couple and the dogs in their lives. Brooks comes to join the Loveless household early in the book. He adds a special dynamic to the Loveless household-joining sister Vanah and Pandora. Brooks had been a show dog that was kept in a crate and not allowed to show his personality or be himself. Oh that will change when Jim and Leslie bring him home with them. Finley will take you from day one in the Loveless house until the end of Brook's life. You will be captivated by this dog and the life he leads. Jim and Leslie are delightful and the life Brooks shares with them and the other dogs is a great story. Jim is quite the character - you will have more than one laugh at Finley's narration of Jim and Leslie and their take on life and their dogs. The couple are very dedicated to their careers, household and the demanding life of "showing their dogs". Finley does a superb job of detailing and relating the thoughts, actions and daily life of Jim, Leslie and Brooks. You cannot read this book and not love Brooks and the devotion between dog and owner. Big Paws, Bigger Heart is unique in that it is told from the dog's point of view and take on life between owner and dog. This book leaves you with a sense of amazement at the devotion between owner and dog. The bond is undeniable and special. You will laugh-lots, and you will love even more. A heartwarming, uplifting story that will be enjoyed by all--pet owners and those without pets!! Good Read!!

Author Bio:

Born in Washington, DC on October 27, 1954 Jim Loveless grew up in suburban Maryland fostering many interests. Aside from excelling in the usual stick and ball sports while growing up, drawing and architecture were prime interests. At age 14, Jim started his own business drawing and selling renderings of the homes in his neighborhood. Along with caddying and working at the local country club he was able to support two other interests of which took up the rest of his time, fishing and bicycling. By the time he entered college with a senatorial scholarship to the School of Architecture at Montgomery College in Rockville, MD, Jim had an incredible resume of interests and experiences to boast about. From coaching Little League baseball to mountain climbing, if the challenge was there he wanted to pursue it. Bored with college, Jim landed a position as a graphics coordinator with a nationally recognized architectural firm, later admitting it was the most satisfying job he ever had. Like everything he did, Jim would keep notes on his experiences as he seemed to always be in the right place at the right time for adventure. An example being, while he held his position as a graphics coordinator he witnessed firsthand what it was like to work in Washington, DC during the Watergate affair. Ever the country boy, working in the city grew old and he went back to school in the hopes of landing a job with the National Park Service. This was not to be as the heritage of electrical contracting was in his blood, handed down from his grandfather, father and uncle. Jim took his drafting skills and went to work with the largest electrical contracting firm in the world, coordinating electrical layouts for installation for the new subway in Washington. Quickly aspiring to estimating where he was key in procuring lucrative contracts, forty years later he still holds a similar position as Chief Estimator with the oldest electrical contracting firm in the world. Over the years, Jim has seen it all, from Watergate to witnessing firsthand the 911 attacks in New York City. Through it all he has maintained a vivid account of all his experiences. Of all the activities Jim has taken part in over the years nothing has given him more pleasure than maintaining his relationships with his dogs. Here too, Jim has experienced with his dogs what most people dream of. Having developed his talents with animals to become a dog trainer, his life with his animals has been heartfelt and often humorous. It took the loss of his latest and most loved dog to inspire him to accomplish a lifelong dream--that was to put his experiences into words so he could share his adventures with others. Jim was very successful creating a newsletter for a local dog club and featured an article about his daily adventures with his dogs, written as if they were telling the stories. Using this successful format, Jim's first book--Big Paws, Bigger Heart will tell the story of their life with him. It will be the first in a series, sharing all the trials and tribulations of life with humans, told by his dogs. Future writings will include Jim's experience as a camp counselor, working in DC, meeting Jacquelyn Kennedy and having a hero as a father.

This is a wonderful book. It's absolutely laugh out loud funny, but it's touching. Man giving voice to his dog, and let's be honest - haven't we all thought about what our animals would sound like if they could talk? What they would say?
What a great reminder that there *are* good people out there who do whatever it takes to make sure their fur kids are taken care of, and properly, and do the best they can for other animals too.
If you love dogs, you need to read this. You won't be sorry and I promise you'll laugh. If you don't laugh at least once in the first ten-twenty pages, then you may want to get that checked out.
