Description

When a husband convinces his wife to join him in a tryst with another woman, there are unintended consequences in this sharply observed erotic tale about the challenges of modern marriage

As a divorce lawyer for Manhattan’s elite, David Greenfield is privy to the intimate, dirty details of failed marriages. He knows he’s lucky to be married to Blair—a Barnard dean and the mother of their college-age daughter, a woman he loves more today than when they tied the knot.

But when seductive photographer Jean Coin asks David to be her lover for six weeks until she leaves for Timbuktu, David is tempted, reasoning that “it’s not cheating if your wife’s there.” A one-night threesome would relieve the pressure of monogamy without wrecking their marriage. What harm could come of fulfilling his longtime sexual fantasy?

“Some readers will love this book for the sex . . . others will be more attracted to the Big Apple wisecracking. . . . If you like your sexy books soft-core, highbrow, and bi-curious, here’s a hot couple hours for you.” —Kirkus Reviews

"Intelligent, sexy, a walk on the smart side." —Jackie Collins, New York Times–bestselling novelist

"Jesse Kornbluth is the essential flaneur of American cultural mores, species Homo Urbanicus, ever striking the perfect harmony between wit and charm with an eye that misses nothing." —Janet Fitch, author of the New York Times bestseller, White Oleander

"I'm totally turned on by Married Sex. Who else will share my excitement? Anyone who desires a book about marital sex in which the erotic finally trumps the domestic. Jesse Kornbluth delves into the intricacies of love and lust with enormous wit, insight and a prose style that will have you begging for more." —Esther Perel, author of the New York Times bestseller Mating in Captivity

"Who knew that a book called Married Sex is ultimately about compassion, tolerance, and breathing into discomfort—all things hard won in relationships, especially in marriage. I read it in one sitting. Laughed. Wept. Related. Learned. And to think that I was in it for the sex!" —Laura Munson, author of This Is Not The Story You Think It Is

"Jesse Kornbluth's elegant, captivating page-turner sates a hunger for an urbane, of-the-moment novel with depth and heart. Jesse Kornbluth knows how to pull a bon mot and an erudite insight from just out of reach—you'd meet his characters at a cocktail party at your own risk. But then he goes and delivers, big time, in the vulnerability and soulfulness department. Married Sex is sexy as hell—but you'll dab your eye at the end." —Sheila Weller, author of the New York Times bestseller Girls Like Us

"Married Sex reads like an episode of “The Good Wife” written by John Updike. And yet it is all Kornbluth: wry, sophisticated, and heartfelt. Set in the world of Manhattan divorce lawyers, uptown academia and the downtown art scene, it is a book that made me—a man who is devoutly gay—long to be, at turns, heterosexual or a lesbian. But most important, it made me long to be in love, no matter how painful a proposition that might be." —Kevin Sessums, author of the New York Times bestseller Mississippi Sissy

"At first glance, Married Sex is 50 Shades of Grey for the smart set. But read on: This is a surprisingly moving meditation on intimacy, trust, and what happens when a man who has everything asks the question, Is that all there is?" —Christina Haag, author of the New York Times bestseller, Come to the Edge: A Love Story

"I'd been waiting for a smart and literate look at sex from the spousal perspective, and Jesse Kornbluth delivered the goods in Married Sex. Anyone looking for a sophisticated alternative to the '50 Shades' phenomenon need look no further. Kornbluth's snappy, sexy, steamy novel about the perils, pitfalls and pleasures of conjugal sex is a must read for all couples determined to go the distance. Married Sex had me wrapped around its little finger until the very last page." —Lee Woodruff, author of the New York Times bestseller, Those We Love Most

"Married Sex is fifty shades of hot-blooded fun, cautionary tale and astute observation of New York City social taxonomy. A voluptuous valentine to romance and marital intimacy, this is dick lit like you’ve never read it before. Open a bottle of wine, start this elegant novel on a rainy morning, finish it by the evening, and spend the rest of the night in bed with someone you love. 'I envied my own life,' David, the narrator writes. I envy this whole book. Jesse Kornbluth: a fine writer." —Sally Koslow, author of The Widow Waltz

"A happily married, New York divorce lawyer takes a gamble and invites his wife to join him in a threesome. What could possibly go wrong? And who but Jesse Kornbluth could have written a novel this sexy, sophisticated, daring, and literate? He knows as much as anyone about how the city's richest eat, pray, love, marry, and divorce. Married sex has never been this sexy—or dangerous." —Elizabeth Benedict, author of The Joy of Writing Sex

"Short, sleek, and sexy as hell, Married Sex reveals what happens when a devoted couple contemplates an affair with a smoking-hot artist. But this shrewd, unpredictable novel is no cheap thrill: along with its page-turning pleasures, it packs a deeply emotional punch. Weeks later, I still can't shake this beautiful book." —Jillian Medoff, author of I Couldn't Love You More

Hip, honest and contemporary

With all the cultural mythologising about marriage, love, sex, what men and women want etc. this feels like a book which cuts through the hype and tries to explore something more real.

At 46, David and Blair are still in love, still have passionate sex, and with their daughter away at college, are a couple again. When a female artist propositions David, he considers himself cool and almost monogamous by suggesting she joins him and his wife – but the change in the sexual dynamic cannot be contained, and David finds he has unleashed more than he expected.

Kornbluth writes well with wit and a flair for the well-turned phrase: characterful rather than mannered, and there’s a sense of both emotional intimacy and honesty about the whole book. It is a short read, no more than a couple of hours, but is a richly observational look at modern marriage – recommended.
