Plus, Magritte, Cliff’s champion basenji—a competitor in the upcoming Westminster Dog Show—may have been a witness to the crime and is now missing.
The search for answers takes Rachel and Dash from the SoHo art scene to the most famous dog show in America. Now Rachel is in the sights of a killer hunting her across a treacherous urban landscape. There’s no one she can trust—especially not of the two-legged variety.

Dennis Keaton hires Rachel and Dash after his good friend Cliff is killed and Cliff's champion basenji goes missing. Was Cliff's death was the result of a hate crime, or was it murder? Could Magritte, Cliff's basenji, be a witness? Rachel's search for the truth takes her from the back alleys of New York and pretentious SoHo galleries to the hallowed halls of the Westminster dog show.
Carol Lea Benjamin's extensive knowledge of dog shows and training help make This Dog for Hire an exceptional read. I admire her portrayal of Dash as a partner and companion. Pit bulls are a breed that is frequently maligned, when in reality they are gentle and loyal dogs, protective but not aggressive. Dash is more than just window dressing to please dog lovers. He plays an important role in solving the murder.
The mystery is more noir than cozy. Rachel is an investigator who moves forward without blinders. Lies and deception are tools of the trade.
The first in the Rachel and Dash mystery series, This Dog for Hire is a wonderful mystery that makes readers want to sit up and beg for more. It is a pleasure to see Open Road Media release this Shamus Award winning novel in ebook form.
Aspects of this novel may not be appropriate for younger mystery readers.
