I could not put this book down. I read it straight through. While both horrified yet empathetic, I felt Matt's struggle for authenticity on every page. This is a must have book for anyone who struggles with a devastating sexual sin from their past. I would also say that every therapist should have this in their arsenal. Matt walks you from the light of belief into the shadows of questioning God's allowance of evil back into the brilliance of God's mercy and and grace. I love that Matt is open about his anger at how God could allow evil and suffering. Far too often we are taught to hide our anger at God. But we either believe He is big enough and loving enough and kind enough to handle every emotion He gave us or we don't. It's that simple. This quote from the book broke me but encapsulates all of Matt's hope. "For those of you who have lived your life beneath the overpass of life, waiting for something UNpainful to happen, I hope you will eventually curl up in your sleeping bag with God and that He'll stroke your hair and whisper all the things you REALLY are right into your ear as you fall asleep." Such truth.
