"Among a plethora of books, studies and op-ed pieces about the importance of coaching and how to execute this most critical of development interventions well, it’s easy to understand why students and practitioners of the craft feel confused or overwhelmed by the array of approaches, frameworks and systems extolled as “the right way.” Michael Bungay Stanier has expertly cut through this confusion with his new book in a manner that is simple to understand, realistic in its intention and ultimately effective to apply. Featured Reviews
Enjoyable, short, witty, and to the point with a dash of humor.
A great quick go to to help the everyday worker. My only feedback, how to coach the uncoachable. People like myself will continue to try and often give up. It would be great to let alone attempt to coach others, but also coach yourself on letting go of those who don't want it.
In Coaching Habit, Michael Bungay Stainer presents 7 questions to be used in conversations between a coach and their coachees. These are “power questions” that allow the coach to get conversations with their team that are more efficient and that get to the point, and helps identify and solve problems.
I have read several books about leadership before, but this one caught my attention in the first pages due to its practicability – it is completely focused in the practical aspect of leadership, using a coaching perspective (the good leader is not just a leader, but they should be a coach, they should not give the answers but lead their team to find the answers themselves).
With the power questions, the author shows us how to be better leaders by being coaches, how to get each person on the team to be more efficient, including the leader/coach.
He also shows, in each chapter, how to identify and change our old habits. So if you want to follow his advice and start using the power questions, you can highlight the parts of each chapter that he shows how to change the old habit, by identifying the trigger that might lead to the old behavior, and start using the power questions instead.
At the end of each chapter, the author also presents scientific information (from scientific researches) that confirms the applicability of each question in real life.
As I said, it is a book that focuses not only on theories, but on the practical side of leadership. That makes this book extremely helpful for anyone in leadership position (not only commercial companies, but also non-profit organizations, churches, parent/children, etc).
The Coaching Habit is a smart, funny, up to date no nonsense look at coaching, leadership and is must read of students studying Leadership and Management modules at MBA and MSc level. Highly recommend this book!
