Kirkus Reviews

When you're the president's pet, who walks you, empties your litter box or scrapes off your perch?

Readers who hunger for information about the nonhumans who've lived at the White House over the years won't learn the answer to those questions, but they will discover that all our chief executives but one, from Washington to Obama, have owned a variety of pets-and, in some cases, been owned by them. In addition to the familiar dogs, cats and birds, some unusual First Animals have included goats, mice, bears, zebras, hyenas, lions, snakes, rats and tigers. Another question that goes unanswered in this book is why the information about presidential pets is conveyed through verse-verse that's not very good and frequently scans poorly at that; how appropriate that the word doggerel already exists, or it would have had to be coined just for this occasion. Brief details about each president's life and term, a "Tell Me More!" feature with tidbits of trivia, and highlights of each president's term in office supplement the pet facts. The two-page spreads include lively, humorous caricatures. The simplistic trivia items are generally interesting and amusing, but there are no sources to verify some of the statements.

Rhymes without reason and no reason for the rhymes. Strictly for browsers and skimmers.

School Library Journal

This is a great introduction to presidential history by way of looking at pets that have lived in the White House, from alligators to pigs and everything in between. Filled with goofy illustrations that will pull kids in, the book is well organized, with each president receiving a colorful spread. Each entry opens with a humorous rhyming poem that describes an event with the pet, which usually has historical significance, and includes "Presidential Stats"-basic information about the man's personal life and term. A "Tell Me More!" box offers a mix of about five pieces of trivia about the president and the animal he lived with. For example, the entry on Grant speaks of his ponies, dog, and parrot, but also talks about how he was the first president to run against a woman and then briefly discusses Victoria Woodhull. "Accomplishments & Events" has three or four items listed. Moberg uses humor, trivia, and children's innate love of animals to bring to life the presidents and the history that surrounded their time in office. This is a book that readers can come back to over and over, enjoying different aspects of it each time and in a different order.

Booklist

Books on presidential trivia are not in short supply, but this one, offering funny rhyming prose alongside relatable trivia facts, distinguishes itself with laugh-out-loud illustrations. Readers will be smitten with the images of Thomas Jefferson nonchalantly walking his two bear cubs on leashes, an angry Andrew Jackson arguing with his foul-mouthed parrot, and Theodore Roosevelt's prized dog, Pete, biting an unassuming French ambassador in the backside. Forty-three anecdotes are included, and each is introduced with a clever poem that is perfectly suited for read-alouds. Lists of accomplishments and basic statistics for each president are also included, and although the book is not tremendously comprehensive, it is notably up-to-date, including the takedown of Osama Bin Ladin [sic] in Barack Obama's section. The mixture of straight nonfiction text, rhythmic verse, and vibrant graphics make this a versatile addition to any collection or classroom in need of a presidential trivia tome.

A great book on fun facts about our presidents and their pets. My library own a copy of this book and I read it a few years ago. I thought this was an updated version and as far as I can tell it's not.

Firstly, there are great pictures to accompany each president. There is a quick little rhyme for each president before the more detailed information. For each president, Moberg includes Presidential Stats, Tell Me More! and Accomplishment and Events. This little book is informative and not all information is specifically about pets, but also about each presidency.

This is a very charming book. The book gives an overview of all of our presidents and the animals that they had at the time of their presidencies. While the poems that introduce each president are a bit uneven, they are followed by interesting tidbits brief enough to keep a child interested.

Even though the pets are the "stars" of the show, there is enough information on each president to keep reading for more. The illustrations are cute and wacky, and very charming. I would definitely read this to my grandson when he is a bit older, and I myself learned a thing or two while reading it.

Presidential Pets: The Weird, Wacky, Little, Big, Scary, Strange Animals That Have Lived in the White House by Julia Moberg is such a delightful, informational book you just have to pick up! On each page there are many incredible fact tidbits that are about that certain president, weird oddities pertaining to him, and accomplishments and other facts you may not know. The book goes through all the presidents. I am a big history buff but I learned so much fun trivia from this book. It was a fun, and informative with lots of creative and imaginative drawings that make you smile. Just a real joy. I needed this! Knowledge, a snicker, and cartoons... and good fun read!!! Loved it, need more of these books. The way it is written, with funny poems mixed with silly facts and true facts, it is good for everyone. Pet lovers would love this book. The perfect gift for that person who has everything. I received this book from NetGalley for a honest review and it in no way effected my rating or review and boy am I glad I got it! Thanks NetGalley!!!

Presidential Pets presented interesting tidbits that both children and adults will find utterly delightful. While this book may not appeal to everyone, it should attract the attention of a certain type of reader.

Have you ever wondered which presidents had pets? Who had a dog or a cat? What if a president had a parrot or a snake or an elephant! Read and rhyme your way through this book chock full of presidential pets which come in all shapes and sizes.

"Presidential Pets" written by Julia Moberg and illustrated by Jeff Albrecht Studios teaches children all about every single pet that has ever lived alongside a president at the White House. Fascinating facts will entertain and surprise children and adults. This book is definitely not lacking on information. There are two pages devoted to each president and his pet(s). The amount of information may be overwhelming for beginning readers but it is presented in a fun way with lots of illustrations. Great read especially during the election year.

Thank you to Net Galley and Imagine for a reading copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

A cute book but I thought that it should have solely focused on the pets that each president had, rather than all the extraneous information about other things that presidents did. Students who were interested in the presidents beyond their name would enjoy this book, but it's not a book that would be borrowed with frequency. On another note, it wasn't easy to review this book because it didn't look right on my Kindle.

This book gives much more than just the presidential pet information; it also provides presidential statistics and lists the significant events of each presidency. The pets themselves are much more varied than I previously knew, and some pets had clever names. I think that all presidents need a dog named Veto!

This was very cute. Each president is represented and discussed. Not only is there a short but fun poem about the pets the presidents had but also a small section about what the presidents were known for, their wives, and some additional interesting facts and information.

I do feel like this would be appropriate for children in a little bit of older elementary or beginning of middle school age because some of the facts about the presidents talk about acts they passed or important events of the time which might be a little advanced for lower elementary.

Overall, this was a lot of fun. I actually read a few sections to my husband and he went on to look up additional facts that were of interest to him. Definitely worth checking out if you enjoy learning about presidential pets. Personally, we have an English Springer Spaniel and decided on him because his breed served as such a strong and wonderful family pet to G.W. Bush.

What a cute book on the various animals that have shared the White House. A great addition to any school library.

Finally, Sophie and her seven-year-old son read Presidential Pets by Julia Moberg. This factual book takes a look at all former US presidents and the pets they kept at the White House, from dogs and cats through to bear cubs, mockingbirds, tigers, and alligators.

Each President is introduced through a short rhyme which is followed up by bullet points about their animals and some interesting facts about their lives. Finally, each President gets a list of stats including their term dates, First Lady, Vice President, Occupation before their presidency, and even their nickname, before their chapter concludes with a list of their accomplishments and events. These lists make this a perfect starting point for school projects and research homework.

This is a fantastic book to introduce children to US history. The fun rhymes about each President’s pets engage interest (my son was particularly fascinated by the tale of Thomas Jefferson’s bear cubs and his pet mockingbird, Dick) while the rest of each section adds detail about their lives without becoming bogged down in complex detail and politics. Sophie–who is British and thus never learned about the Presidents at school–also found the book very educational, although she didn’t particularly enjoy the style of artwork found throughout. She found the early chapters particularly interesting as they focused on individuals in the Hamilton musical about which she is not at all obsessed…
