Melanie Jacoby comes home to find a completely dark house and her roommate Nia dead at the bottom of their stairs, looking like a tragic accidental fall. What no one knows is that Mel and Nia, along with seven other women, are reborn Muses and Nia would never be without light. When detective Nate Malone shows up to investigate, he at first believes that it is an accident, but he suddenly begins to have visions of a man in a golden mask at the top of the stairs pushing Nia. Shaken by these visions, and what follows, he starts looking for evidence of a homicide, and along the way starts to fall for Mel. But there is a group of men trying to rid the world of the inspiration the Muses would bring, and they want to find the hidden gods imprisoned in the Earth and bring back the Golden Age of Man. And, there is nothing that they won’t do to achieve those goals, including murdering all of the Muses.
This was my first book by this author, and I can tell you it won’t be my last. The book was well-written, had an interesting plot with a different spin on the paranormal (muses!), and the characters were really interesting. I especially enjoyed the interaction between Mel and Nate; their romance was really sweet and touching, with a little heat thrown in. One thing I’m really looking forward to in the series is getting to know the other muses. We got a glimpse of them, but I can’t wait to see them fully fleshed out to the degree we saw Mel. There was only one tiny thing that bothered me, and since I can’t say too much because it’s a spoiler, I’ll just say: two, three days was not enough time, or maybe my internal timeline was off. How’s that to intrigue you to read the book? I am really looking forward to the next book, and if you are looking for a nice paranormal romantic suspense book, look no further. This book is great! Highly recommend!
