Quilling-- the art of making shapes out of tightly coiled paper strips-- was once revered as a safe and appropriate leisure activity for proper ladies, whose feeble minds and gentle spirits could handle little else. And while the times have changed, quilling has endured as a papercraft and is gaining popularity. It's also not as mindless as those from the 18th century believed.
In about 130 pages Thrilling Quilling manages to be pretty comprehensive on the art of quilling. It covers the basics and a bit more. The instructional pictures are clear and easy to follow. While the list of suggested materials is a bit daunting for a craft with such potential to be low budget, you can get by with less and still make many of the best projects from the book. I was impressed with the range of projects. This isn't just for card makers, but I do think people who already dabble in papercrafts would get the most mileage out of this book.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for granting me access to this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was provided a copy of the book by the publisher and NetGalley for my honest opinion.
I remember quilling with my grandmother more than 40 years ago. I am amazed at the wonderful projects in this book. The step by step illustrations are wonderful. I can see these projects being used with crafters ( or non-crafters) of all ages. I can't wait to buy a copy for our library and one for myself!
I enjoy crafting especially paper crafts. I have even bought the supplies and try my hands at quilling. The articles and directions left much to be desire. So I am thrilled to read Thrilling Quilling by Elizabeth Moad. It starts with the very basic and process to challenging projects for the crafter.
I appreciated that it covers supplies that I had not been aware of using, several that are around the house. Along with this is how to preserve the project that have been painstakingly made. Most of all, it has clear easy to follow directions with step by step illustrations. Thrilling Quilling has so many ideas for paper crafts and card making that there should be something for anyone who is interested in this craft. Around 120 pages, it is the best most comprehensive book I have seen on the subject of quilling. Now I believe even I can do it and do it well!
The publisher through Net Galley provided a copy.
This beautiful book does the craft of quilling due justice. Using not only purchased papers but also paper found around the house, it allows one to learn this art slowly and methodically. Projects are easily explained and easy to follow, no matter your degree of expertise in paper crafting. Recommended.
This is a wonderful quilling book. It begins with the history of quilling and goes on to describe the equipment and materials used. The author thoroughly lays out the instructions for many of the shapes and variations on shapes used in quilling. The book is excellent for those who are beginning to quill as well as a good reference for experienced quiller. There is a wide variety of projects described with step by step instructions using diagrams and photos to help the reader accomplish the beautiful results pictured. There are lots of wonderful ideas included in the book.
I was excited to review Elizabeth Moad’s book Thrilling Quilling because I have great childhood memories of making quilling projects around the ages that my children are now. I would have loved this book when I was learning quilling. The book is full of full color photos. It is well organized layout. The book begins with an introduction and then explains about paper, equipment, and tools. Then the author explains most of the techniques used in quilling. The author then goes into detail on how to make 15 projects and gives the templates for those projects. In the back of the book is a list of suppliers and materials as well as an index. This book is an excellent sourcebook for quilling and I recommend anyone interested in paper craft to own this book.

This book on quilling covered basics, tools, techniques and many different designs and how to make them. This gives the basics to anyone wanting to learn and enough info to do so and shine more complex designs for those who already know the craft. The books format males it easy to jump to the sections you are ready for. One thing that was a bit disappointing was how juvenile the designs were. The cover is fairly representive of the type of designs included, cute but maybe for kids or a different style then I odd. I did however find some designs inspiring like the 3D snowflake, bobbing bluebell, and fabulous flower head. Though i could also easily use the techniques taught here to make more abstract or complex designs I can find with a simple Google search. Helpful book, but maybe not thrilling.
Comprehensive and encyclopedic treatment of all things quilling. Tools and related supplies needed, measuring, types of coils and shapes, how-tos with easy-to-follow photographs, and sample projects galore--all organized by theme. Sure to delight papercrafters, this book will show you how to incorporate quilling in a variety of projects. Five stars. Reprint of a 2008 David & Charles publication.
Quilling was a great art with lot of concentration and creativity. In this book each technique and the project are clearly explained. Beginners can learn quilling from this book.....
Great book for the avid quiller.great instruction for the beginner as well. Would recommend to anyone interested in the beautiful art of quilting.
I received a free digital copy of the book from NetGalley
The book has a lot of nice projects, that are easy to do for a beginner, but not too simplistic, so they might be appealing to the more experienced people. I liked that besides the usual flower galore, there were many other objects created, like vegetables and fruits, abstract decorations, animals and regular household objects, like garden tools, for example. The explanations are good, both on general techniques used, and for each of the projects. Most of the time you will need only the basic tools, like quilling tool, scissors, ruler and pins, but some ask for the use of some extras, like a fringing tool, for example. I liked that they also show other ways to use each of the quilling projects at the end of each step by step instructions.
