Description
In Eluding Darkness, author Raguel Charles reveals some of the island’s secrets. Growing up in Haiti, Raguelwas quite familiar with voodoo. He was taught to not pick up objects left in the street, to not give a stranger the correct time of day, and to never trust anyone.
Allowed to take part in voodoo ceremonies since he was a young child, he witnessed interactions between the spirits possessing people and their servants. Talked of people turning into animals? Dead people raised up to live as zombie slaves? Casting a spell on an enemy to hurt or kill them? were strange occurrences in Raguel’senvironment.
But Raguel’s journey through Darkness became one of victory. Through a voyage fraught with the ups and downs of moving to the US, learning how to responsibly provide for himself, and living through the agonizing deaths of several family members and friends, Raguel learned the life-giving secret of true power and joy. And, within Eluding Darkness, he shares that secret with you.
A Note From the Publisher
As a child growing up in Haiti, I had the privilege of attending private school throughout my primary school years. The private schools primarily focussed on strong writing skills. it was those teachings that inspired my love for writing.
I attended Muhlenberg Schools of allied health in NJ, where I earned an associate in applied science as well as a certificate for Radiography. I returned to Muhlenberg for Radiation therapy while completing my Bachelor in Science at Thomas Edison University.

I appreciated a book that finally casts voodoo as in a realistic light that describes the history and practices, rather than seeing voodoo presented in satire, as some comical or crazy cult of satanic worship as is common.
Charles describes his experience growing up in Haiti and his path from darkness to light. Charles' family did participate in the Voodoo faith as many in Haiti do at one time or another and his descriptions of the practices, including the use of lamps, herbs, powders and oils give a reader an insider's perspective that is scarcely talked about publicly. He goes on to relate his transition from voodoo to Christianity and the struggle he had finding Christ and accepting Jesus into his heart. Eluding Darkness is a unique memoir that gives a glimpse into a world rarely seen.
Voodoo....a taboo subject to most, interesting to some. This book was a peek into the world of voodoo told from the author's point of view and growing up in Haiti. Very insightful book and very well written. Good stories of situations and a great glossary at the end of the book that provides pronunciation and meaning that will help with reading this book. This book held my interest and I was a bit sad when I finished it. So very glad to read that Mr. Charles has stayed on his path of light, while taking us on his journey of Darkness to arrive at the point he is now. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the advanced reading copy of this book in return for my honest review.
