Description
Is three the charm?
Lauren Cooper is on her way to her life’s dream. She’s financed and finished college and law school all on her own. And she’s up for partner at the largest law firm in Indigo Bay. There’s nothing to stop her from concentrating everything on achieving that goal. Until Jesse Brewster, the man who broke her heart twice, shows up sleeping off the night before on the beach, and she’s called in to serve as his public defender.
Looking to make a new start after the racing accident that ended his lucrative motocross career and sent him spiraling into darkness, the former champion had envisioned an entirely different scenario if he ever saw Lauren again. That vision was more along the lines of the successful businessman he’d be once he rehabbed the seaside mansion he’s inherited from his uncle and sold it to open a custom bike shop.
Sparks fly between them, and Jesse vows to fan those sparks once he’s got the project successfully underway. But someone starts sabotaging it, putting Jesse behind on the deadline he has to meet to get the property off the Indigo Bay Planning Board’s condemned property list. And Lauren has a sick suspicion that her bosses are somehow involved.
Jesse and Lauren had once promised they’d wait for each other while they pursued their career dreams. Despite that broken promise, neither can deny the love that’s still between them. But now that they are on the cusp of reaching those dreams, are they willing to risk everything to renew that love?

Lauren and Jesse were in love when they were younger, but a serious motocross accident and his mother’s death led Jesse to disappear from her life. Several years later, they meet again in Indigo Bay where Lauren practices law and Jesse has recently inherited a historic mansion. Lauren’s mother has always dreamed of owning a bed and breakfast and offers to partner with Jesse in restoring the mansion. In the meantime, Jesse learns that he is the father of a toddler whose mother has recently passed away. As renovations begin on the mansion, a mystery develops as the mansion is vandalized and then damaged by an arsonist. Lauren races to find who is at fault as Jesse struggles to me the city’s renovation deadline to prevent the mansion from being condemned.
Will Lauren find the culprit and will she and Jesse all back in love? You’ll need to return to Indigo Bay to find out!
The sense of intimacy and belonging between these two – Jesse and Lauren -, despite the years apart, doubts and fears, was strong and touching, making me feel connected to them throughout the story.
I usually like a story with a single dad, but this was particularly sweet and endearing, with an adorable little girl and the love fortress her father and the secondary characters spontaneously create around her. I loved the older characters too, so loving and protective.
This is a simple story, with romance and a good dose of suspense, but the characters are well developed and the dialogue and writing style are top-notch. Our slightly wounded hero has just the perfect amount of vulnerability – not too much, not too little, just enough – to make him alluring.
Sometimes you just need to sit down with a book that you know will lead you feelings of happiness and contentment. Lauren and Jesse's love story had some bumps along the way. As you share their journey back to one another, you can't help but have empathy in regard to the regrets and miscues they encountered along the way. It makes you realize perception is a two way street, and life shouldn't be lived without making an effort to push past what you think is happening to make a grab for what you want to happen.
This was my first book by Jean C. Gordon. It didn’t disappoint. I love a good romance, but this also had a little suspense. I will be looking to read more.
