Description

Easy techniques for rebuilding good gut health, strengthening the immune system, and reducing inflammation

• Examines the many functions of your intestinal flora and their role in a healthy immune system, including their anti-inflammatory effects

• Explores the major causes of weakened flora, especially the overuse of antibiotics and the overconsumption of refined, low-fiber foods in the modern diet

• Details how to restore your flora after taking antibiotics and how to strengthen your flora with prebiotics, probiotics, and simple changes in eating and drinking habits

Our intestinal flora perform a large number of duties--far more than just aiding digestion. Recent research has revealed that our intestinal flora help fight off infections by killing microbes and viruses, increase our resistance to allergens and inflammation, cleanse our internal systems by neutralizing toxins, and even support our moods and energy levels by interacting with hormones and neurotransmitters.

In this easy-to-follow guide, Christopher Vasey explains how to restore balance to your microbiome. He examines the many functions of intestinal flora and their role in a healthy immune system, including their anti-inflammatory effects and role in the creation of lymphocytes. He explores the major causes of weakened flora, especially the overuse of antibiotics and the overconsumption of refined, low-fiber foods, and he outlines the ailments and diseases that can result, such as bloating, food intolerance, mood swings, fungal infections, and greater susceptibility to colds and flu.

Offering step-by-step methods, Vasey explains how to restore the flora after taking medications such as antibiotics, how to support your flora with the ingestion of prebiotics: high-fiber foods that provide essential nutrients for good gut health, and how to strengthen your flora with probiotics: foods or supplements that facilitate the regeneration of healthy intestinal flora. The author explores simple changes you can make in your eating and drinking habits to support your microbiome as well as practices to keep the flora of the colon out of the intestinal environment where they can wreak havoc. He also details the steps of the healing process, including the cleansing reactions you may experience as your intestinal flora rebalances.

Providing everything you need to know for optimum digestive wellness, Vasey shows that repairing the balance of your intestinal flora is simple and accessible to anyone.

This was an interesting read that's user-friendly. Nothing was too complicated and I felt better informed about gut health. It started with a quick quiz to determine how healthy your gut is and continued with chapters on various topics and 'did you know' points scattered throughout the book which nicely broke up the chapter reading. My thanks to Netgalley and publisher for a digital copy in exchange for my review.

Un-putdownable non-fiction!
I have read a number of books about digestive health lately and found the majority of them verbose and “meh”. This is a welcome departure and I urge everyone to read it. It is so densely packed with concise infirmation that I was quite glad for the frequent short recaps like “Good to know” and “What we’ve learned” paragraphs. That is not to say the content is dumbed down, there still is a lot to take in, but these “pause and reflect” moments make it all easier to digest (SCNR). Part one deals with: “What is your intestinal flora?” and part two with “How do you restore it?” Simples!
I now look at my belly and imagine the teeming activity and great wars fought in it and I pat it and say: Well done, my friend!
Pssst, it’s “acetic acid” not “ascetic acid”.

I cannot tell you how excited I was to see this book here. After having c.diff twice in the fall of 2020 I am fully immersed into figuring out my gut health and this book was PHENOMENAL. So much information but worded in a way that made sense and was easy to digest. Ha get it digest?! I have no doubt I will be referring to this book often as I work on my gut health. Thank you for writing such a wonderful guide!!

This is a good basic primer and a short read but I didn't learn anything new (granted, I read a lot about the subject). I was hoping for more suggestions for specific foods and recipes, plus more of the latest cutting edge research since knowledge in this field is really growing fast. It'll be great for those who don't know a lot about probiotics, prebiotics, the microbiome, etc. It's easy to follow even if you don't have a science background.

I read a digital ARC of this book for review.

A comprehensive guide to your gut and its flora. A good, clear, to the point book to answer the questions you may have. Digestion is vital, what you eat is the key. This is a no nonsense introduction to the subject. If your stomach is not doing well, neither are you. This book might give you the answers to what is wrong. I recommend it to anyone interested in their health, well being and anyone with gut problems.

Restoring Your Intestinal Flora is a great introductory book on the gut and the variety of beneficial bacteria that resides there. Despite the wealth of information on the subject the book is easy to read, but you will need to pause a bit to take it all in. There are lots of tips and tricks for improving your gut flora and restoring it via what you eat for maximum benefits. It is not a recipe book but will guide you on what to eat and what to avoid. It is best suited to beginners on the subject and those interested in improving their health.
