Description
Shannon Price's The Endless Skies is a breakout standalone epic fantasy about shapeshifting warriors perfect for fans of Adrienne Young and Wonder Woman.
High above the sea, floats the pristine city of the Heliana. Home to winged-lion shapeshifters—the Leonodai—and protected from the world of humans by an elite group of warriors, the Heliana has only known peace.
After years of brutal training, seventeen-year-old Rowan is ready to prove her loyalty to the city and her people to become one of the Leonodai warriors. But before Rowan can take the oath, a deadly disease strikes the city’s children. Soon the warriors—including two of Rowan’s closest friends—are sent on a dangerous mission to find a fabled panacea deep within enemy lands.
Left behind, Rowan learns a devastating truth that could compromise the mission and the fate of the Heliana itself. She must make a decision: stay with the city and become a warrior like she always dreamed, or risk her future in an attempt to save everyone she loves. Whatever Rowan decides, she has to do it fast, because time is running out, and peace can only last so long...

This book was a really fun and enjoyable read. The characters were relatable and had great depth. I definitely recommend it and will be ordering copies for my library.
I enjoyed reading this book! The storyline is unique and the characters are adorable. I love the shapeshifting abilities of the characters, the vivid action-packed scenes, and the surprising plot twist on the last third of the book. The first few chapters are for character introductions and story setting. The world-building was very compelling with a splendid description of a floating city, the Heliana, their traditions, and festivities, and the other kingdoms of Vyrinterra and its people. The story was narrated from multiple perspectives and was very engaging to read until the end.
I love the main character, Rowan, a warrior elect who will do anything to save her kingdom from a deadly disease and the attacks of humans. She is loyal, undaunted, formidable, and would break any rules if it means saving the lives of many.
The love triangle was okay and predictable. Not much of a surprise as to who the main character will end up with. Loved how the author described how empowered Leonodai women are and how they were given equal rights and opportunity compared to humans. A kingdom where women can be who they want to be and their voices heard.
The ending was heartbreaking for me. I won't get into details and would recommend you guys to read this book and find out!
I love that it's a standalone book but this story has a lot of potentials and can be expanded into a series. How lovely would it be if the author would create another wonderful story of a particular ambassador from another kingdom or a spinoff about Isla?
If you love shapeshifters, magic, action-packed adventures, romance, and friendship, I would recommend this book to you.
I'm so grateful to the author, to Macmillan-Tor/Forge, and Netgalley for allowing me to read and review the arc of this book. All opinions are my own.
What an amazing story. Shannon's writing really pulls you into the story. Characters are dynamic, realistic, and amazing. Their plot will keep you entertained. I highly recommend it!
First off, I LOVE the cover! I am also obsessed with this book! I gave it five starts. I can’t wait to get a physical copy and I will be recommending this to everybody!
I wish I could visit Heliana ! What a beautiful world the author has created. I had no idea what this book was going to be like, I certainly didn’t expect shape shifting warriors! But in all my naivety, I am really happy to say I was sucked in by a gorgeous book cover.
Rowan is a powerful, female, warrior and she has been training for years to become a warrior. When disaster strikes the city, in the form of a disease attacking the children, Heliana begins to fall. It’s up to Rowan and the Leonodai warriors to find the cure in the land of men.
I would definitely recommend this to my students and I loved the pace and urgency of the plot. It was exciting and I read it all in three days. I’m so disappointed to learn it won’t be a trilogy as although it’s a lovely stand alone book, I would have really liked to have learnt more about the other mythical worlds. If you want escapism, this book is perfect.
Perfect for fans of Sara Larson’s SISTERS OF SHADOW AND LIGHT.
This epic fantasy is told from multiple POVs in first person. A mysterious disease is killing the Leonodai children (magical shape-shifters). The humans have the cure but refuse to make a treaty. The warriors are sent to obtain the cure at all costs, but they don’t know the full story. Rowan, warrior-elect does and is willing to risk everything.
Excellent world-building, a love-triangle, and surprising twists make this fantasy a delightful adventure read.
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review.
Typically fantasy isn’t the type of book that I will tend to read but wow am I glad I read this! It’s action packed with twists and turns. Hope is such a central theme in this book, and after the year we’ve had I think this is the perfect book to pick up and read.
