Description

Northstar Security agent, Riley O’Neal, balks at posing as anyone’s husband for an assignment. Nevertheless, to rescue the kidnapped wife of a U.S. Senator, he’ll perform his duty and do his best to resist the charms of the very woman who deceived him on a previous mission.

U.S. Army Lt. Mary “Chip” Anderson is uneasy about the undercover assignment to pose as newlyweds. Concealing her attraction to Riley while staying focused on the task, may be the biggest challenge. Despite efforts to remain objective, enforced proximity ignites emotions and a desire to make the fake honeymoon real.

When Chip is kidnapped during a botched rescue attempt of the senator's wife, both women become pawns in the case that threatens the nation’s security. Riley must remain objective, save the women, and avert the threat. But after that, can he convince Chip that she wants to wear his ring forever?

This book has been great. Even though it was kinda a given that the people that turned out to be involved. Mary was a soldier through and through and when she met Riley doing undercover work she never thought she would see him again and the feeling for him would just gtow..Riley also hado issues to get over with and letting his heart open up to love. One thing led to another and the more danger they were in the feelings got stronger.

This is the first book I read by Ms Fletcher and it sure will not be the last. Though it’s book 3 of her series, Northstar Security, know that it’s a standalone.
This story centers around Riley O’Neal, one of the agents of Northstar Star Security, and Lt Chip Mary Anderson. They are recruited to act as newlyweds, in order to retrieve the kidnapped wife of a senator. They had met a year ago, neither knowing the true identity of the other. There is immediate chemistry between them but they both are fighting it.
What I liked best of the book was that it had suspense, undercover work, chemistry between the main characters, a plausible plot, complex characters dealing with their own internal conflicts and great descriptions of the American Southwest.
A worthwhile book to get .

I received this book from Netgalley. The opinions expressed are solely my own.

Beyond Duty is a well-written suspenseful thriller filled with twists and turns. The surprises and action make this a real page turner.

For all its success with the thriller aspect of the story, the romance part fell flat for me. I never quite believed the chemistry between Chip and Riley. Chip seemed to determined to be independent and prove herself to do anything that a man could do. Riley seemed to have this connection to Chip that was more of an unexplained lust rather than love.

The idea of them posing as husband and wife also did nothing to further the chemistry. When most of the suspense was wrapped up, both Chip and Riley seemed content with walking away- again leaving me wondering where the connection was. Overall, I loved the action of the story but found the romance completely unbelievable.
