Who tried it knows how difficult is to draw or paint horses. This book helps the reader tremendously by treating the subject from many views. The first 20 pages describe briefly the various media (graphite, coloured pencils, pastels, oil and acrylic, watercolour), tools and techniques used in the book.
Basic anatomy is treated, various parts of the body of the animal and how to draw or paint them, including of course horse portraits. Some pages about the horse in motion.
I've counted about twenty different breeds treated, Step by step exercises richly illustrated and thoroughly explained. Excellent reference, incredible value by breaking down to simple steps a so complicated subject. Surely there is much more to learn and practice about it but this volume is highly recommended for the majority of artists who want occasionally draw or paint a horse. I appreciated already Faces & Features from the same series, I can't praise enough this kind of art intructional book.
I have tried to draw/paint/color horses with mixed results for years. I love horses and want to capture them well. Art Studio: Horses & Ponies is just what I've been needing! Covering everything from basic techniques in pencil, acrylic, watercolor, oil, and more, to proportions, eyes, coat, and even breeds, this book has it all! I loved looking through it and learning so much. The projects are interesting and varied. It may be targeted for beginners, but there is plenty of information on techniques for even the more advanced horse lover/artist. Strongly recommend.
Art Studio: Horses & Ponies is a tutorial guide for all things equine. This is an ongoing series based on the same format: specific subjects (dogs, faces, horses, flowers) with a built in tutorial guide for specific learning projects using a wide variety of media.
Released 19th March 2019 by Quarto on their Walter Foster imprint, it's 144 pages and available in paperback format.
This is a clearly written and accessible book with a logical layout. The first chapter (12% of the page content) is a very condensed introduction to tools and associated media (lifting, granulation, and masking fluids). The included intro is not meant as a primary instruction, so is more suited to intermediate or advanced artists who are already familiar with the techniques. The following chapter (10%) covers basic techniques for pencil, acrylic, oils, pastels, and watercolors. There are also sub-chapters with more in-depth equine anatomy (eyes, features, anatomy, and proportion).
The following 6 chapters include many small tutorial projects with step-by-step instructions. These will be familiar to everyone who has used a similar guide in the past.
This one is well written and meticulously illustrated. The graphics are lovely (see cover). This is mostly a technique manual for developing a specific drawing and painting skill set which can also be applied to other subjects, if desired.
Four stars. I love these guides. It would make a good (and popular) choice for library or art classroom use.
If you love horses and want to develop your talents and techniques for drawing them, this book will be an excellent guide. It is helpfully divided by mediums, types of horses and horse features and also includes numerous how-tos. The many tips and projects, along with the excellent photographs and illustrations, will help you as you progress. So much is demonstrated in these pages, even including how to sharpen your pencils! Enjoy your creations. They will be gorgeous.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. The opinions are my own.
Art Studio: Horses & Ponies: More than 50 projects and techniques for drawing and painting horses and ponies in pencil, acrylic, watercolor, and more! by Walter Foster Creative Team is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary. This is a fantastic art book with gorgeous illustrations with step-by-step projects for several different horses or foals. There is the basic template for drawing the side view of a horse's head and a 3/4 view also. Illustrations all the way through showing how to use pencil, acrylics, oil, watercolor, and my favorite - pastels!
So it not only shows the reader how to draw the horse of their choice but how to add color or shade with graphite.
This would be good for beginners with the drawing and maybe beginners to intermediate for coloring.
Wonderful book! I plan to pick it up!
"Art Studio: Horses & Ponies" is an art instruction book focused on drawing and painting horses. They started with some brief descriptions of art materials and techniques. Then they moved on to step-by-step portraits of horses and ponies: different breeds, adults and colts, and viewed from different angles. They had several demonstrations each for pencil, oil and acrylic, watercolor, pastel, and colored pencils. They assume you have some skill in your chosen medium, so the directions were basically 'use these colors to draw these things in this order.' If you have trouble creating the correct coat color or getting the horse in proportion, this book will probably be helpful.
Fantastic read for children. This book was loved by my 2 children when I read it to them. So much so they want me to buy it so definitely a huge hit
What a helpful book! This book contains information on how to draw and/or paint horses & ponies in a myriad of mediums, quite a bit more than I've ever seen combined in one book before (it contains drawing, oil &acrylic, colored pencil, pastels, and even watercolor instructions.). Each part of the horses and ponies are broken down to smaller steps, too, as things like eyes tend to be a bit difficult and are good to have a step-by-step guide to.
If you have an interest in capturing the beauty of horses in your own artwork this book will be perfect. At times the author’s final drawings seem almost lifelike and its hard to believe they have been drawn by hand.
The first timer will find exploring the tools and materials section very helpful before making a start. There are also plenty of techniques to explore and each is accompanied by clear explanation.
I love horses and if I was going to attempt to draw one this is the type of book I would turn to.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a free digital copy of this book in return for an honest review.
As a formerly horsey girl who drew a lot of horses in her childhood years, I would have been delighted to have this book! Includes a comprehensive overview of art media and techniques, so a novice artist could pick up this book and easily get started. Lessons include drawing different parts of the horse, best brushes for getting mane and coat textures correct, etc. Good for older kids, teens, and adults.
This is an excellent book for learning how to draw and paint horses in a variety of ways and with different media. It tackles what is for many a difficult subject to draw. Each part is broken down in sections such as eyes, and different breeds are studied. Although it is aimed at beginners this is a substantial book that would be suitable for all levels. The instruction and illustrations are excellent. Highly recommended Book.
Fabulous book. Cover so much ground, that if you are interested in painting, let alone painting horses, this book will teach you a lot. The subject is horse and it covers the basic anatomy and proportions, and then goes on to explain eyes and features in terms of the use of watercolour, acrylic and oils. This part is excellent
The next area covered are portraits in pencil, watercolour, oils, and acrylic. Also it covers various breed and stance, there is even a part of the how to draw various coat variations and mixing the various mediums to get a accurate coat colour.
This book is top class and I found it excellent not only for horse painting but good tips for all types of designs.
